Caulastraea

The genus Caulastraea comprises five species that live in the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific region. Depending on the species, they are distributed from Mozambique to the Seychelles and the Maldives, as well as the central Pacific, and from northern Australia to southern Japan.

Caulastraea are robust corals that thrive in high- and low-light conditions on the ocean floor. They are therefore also very suitable for beginners to the marine aquarium hobby and are very popular and widespread.
Their coloration ranges from neon green to gray-brown. They have a “phaceloid” growth form, meaning they are cup-shaped. The diameter of the individual corallites ranges from 8 to 25 mm depending on the species. The polyps close during the day and open at dusk to catch plankton with their transparent tentacles. They can be easily fed additional frozen food up to mysis size, which they reward with lively growth.

Caulastraea furcata `grΓΌnΒ΄

This attractive coral is less sensitive and can cope with less light. However, it thrives with plenty of light β€” the polyps become wonderfully fleshy and plump, and grow densely packed together. The 10- to 20-mm-sized corallites branch out from the base and form a spherical colony due to their dichotomous branching. Many small animals find hiding places between the branches. However, the corallites are too close together to provide sleeping quarters for fish.
The septa are irregularly shaped, with some being thicker than others. The thicker, lighter-colored septa give the colony a distinctive “striped” appearance. This is also what distinguishes it from similar species.

Leptastrea sp.1 `grΓΌnΒ΄

This stony coral forms strong, massive, crust-like colonies. Due to its fighting tentacles and mesenteric filaments, it should be kept at a greater distance from other corals. It prefers light to strong indirect currents.

Cyphastrea decadia

The Cyphastrea genus is quite unusual and rare, both in marine aquariums and coral reefs.
Even within this genus, however, our pink-orange Cyphastrea decadia is a real rarity.
It is the only species among the nine described species of the genus whose colonies grow branched with Acropora-like axial corallites. The number of primary septa ranges from 10 to 12. It is found in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Ryukyu Islands in the north to the Coral Triangle and as far south as Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa, but it is also rare in its natural habitat.

Cyphastrea decadia is a sensitive “little plant” that needs stable water conditions and grows slowly.
We received it from a coral breeder in 2015, and it took at least five years for it to acclimate and grow sufficiently for us to fragment and sell an increasing number of cuttings.
We now have a good stock and can offer this fantastic coral in sizes XS (mini-frag), S, and M.
One notable characteristic is that it does not tolerate strong light. Therefore, the best placement in the tank is a semi-shaded spot at the bottom or on the edge.

Echinophyllia sp. `redΒ΄

It’s a good starter coral. It requires minimal light and a weak current. It grows in a flat, plate-like shape and should be kept at a safe distance from other corals due to its sensitive tentacles.

Lobophyllia hemprichii

This beautiful, submassive, growing LPS coral has several mouth openings in its large polyps.
The polyps open at night, allowing you to easily feed the extended tentacles frozen food.
Large colonies form a hemispherical shape and are often called “brain corals.”
