Coral Reef Workshop new date!
As part of the CORAL REEF WORKSHOP, four different 2-day workshops will take place from 17 May to 31 May 2025 at the Papua Paradise Eco Resort on the island of Batanta/Indonesia. The workshop will be led by marine biologist Stephan Moldzio.
At the Centre for Marine Biodiversity, we explore the reefs of Raja Ampat in four marine biology workshops:
* Sampling & microscope sessions
* Identifying fish, corals and invertebrates
* Exploring the relationships in the coral reef
* Raja Ampat Special: Seagrass Meadows and Mangroves
FISCH – WORKSHOP – first week
* Fish – their family characteristics and ecology
* List of fish species, use of scientific databases
* Guided dives
* Fish presentation & quiz
* Workshop booklet & certificate
CORAL – WORKSHOP – first week
* Coral Biology & Identification
* Coral Reef Ecology, Food Webs, Marine Conservation
* Guided dives & fluorescent night dive
* Coral presentation & quiz
* Coral finder & certificate
INVERTEBRATE -WORKSHOP – second week
* Sandy bottom, reef rock and plankton sampling
* Microscope sessions & invertebrate identification
* Zoological drawing
* Guided dives
* Coral Reef Presentation & Quiz
* Workshop booklet & certificate
RAJA AMPAT-WORKSHOP – second week
* Exploring seagrass beds and mangroves
* Characteristics and importance of these two habitats
* Sampling & microscope sessions
* Summary of workshop results & conclusion
Course content
In the FISH WORKSHOP we will learn about the family characteristics and the way of life of the different reef fish. During a total of 4 specially guided dives, the knowledge gained will be put into practice and deepened. Fish identification skills will be developed.
We work with scientific databases and compile a species list. The programme also includes an interesting lecture on Indo-Pacific fishes and a fish identification quiz.
After an exciting coral presentation, the CORAL WORKSHOP will focus on the ecology of coral reefs, reef formation and erosion, zonation and the different types of reefs. The Indopacific Coral Finder is the tool for systematic coral identification and by the end of the workshop participants will be able to identify any stony coral to genus level.
An aesthetic highlight is the fluorescent night dive.
The CORAL REEF WORKSHOP at the beginning of the second week will also focus on the ecology of coral reefs: Food webs, predator-prey relationships, parasitism and symbioses, functional groups such as algae eaters, current threats to coral reefs and conservation.
Samples of small organisms on the reef, in the sand and in the water column are taken and analysed under a stereo microscope.
A zoological drawing is made by looking closely at the body plans of the different groups of organisms
The RAJA AMPAT WORKSHOP explores the neighbouring habitats of seagrass meadows and mangroves and their complex interactions and immense importance to coral reefs.
An unforgettable marine biology activity holiday at the centre of marine biodiversity!
At the beginning of the workshops, each participant receives an interesting workshop booklet and at the end a certificate of attendance confirming the content of the course. Using a variety of illustrative methods and teamwork, we will explore the connections so that each participant contributes to the overall result. There will be four evenings of lectures on different topics related to coral reefs. The course is led by marine biologist Stephan Moldzio.
